TokenShield — AI Token Cost Shield & Circuit Breaker

TokenShield is a lightweight FastAPI middleware gateway that acts as an infrastructure cost shield between multi-agent frameworks (LangGraph, CrewAI, AutoGen) and downstream LLMs. It operates at the networking layer via an OpenAI-compatible inbound gate, intercepting three classes of cost leak:

  1. Infinite loop cascades — detects when an autonomous agent framework enters a repetitive prompt cycle and trips a circuit breaker (HTTP 429).
  2. Duplicate prompt cascades — monitors rolling payload signatures per session/IP.
  3. Token bleed anomalies — intercepts runaway token consumption before it hits the API budget.

It includes a zero-cost offline sandbox for testing the circuit-breaking engine without consuming real API credits. Routes between Google Gemini (via OpenAI-compatible adapter) and native OpenAI endpoints based on model prefix.

Relevance

Novel approach to LLM infrastructure cost governance — specifically targets the cost explosion problem in multi-agent systems, which is a growing pain point in LLMOps.
